Volunteer tree plantingHow did the Environment Centre Become Established?

For several years members of the community and Officers of Baulkham Hills Shire Council had visioned the presence of a centre within the Cattai Creek Catchment from which environmental activities could be co-ordinated. The Hills Shire HORSE – a project funded by the Department of Environment and Climate Change – provided the impetus for this vision to come to fruition, with the establishment of the Community Environment Centre at Annangrove Park; a major environmental resource for the community.

The Community Environment Centre was officially opened by the Mayor of Baulkham Hills Shire, Clr Sonya Phillips, on Sunday 30 July 2006. This opening coincided with Planet Arks National Tree Day with thousands of grasses and shrubs being planted under the Ironbarks of the Endangered Turpentine Ironbark Forest community. What Projects are Being Co-ordinated from the Environment Centre?

Some of the projects currently being co-ordinated from the Environment Centre include:

  • The Hills Shire HORSE which fosters a closer partnership with the rural community, particularly the horse community, aiming to assist landholders with the environmental management of their rural properties.
  • Privet out of Cattai which is the continuation of a program co-ordinated by Cattai Landcare which aims to mitigate Privet , a highly invasive environmental weed from the Cattai Creek Catchment.
  • Waterwise Garden Demonstration Site located at the rear of the Environment Centre which displays various plant species which are drought-tolerant, suitable for gardens and are non-invasive so they won't spread into bushland areas!
  • Cattai Landcare Group will be co-ordinated through the Centre to enable this community group to continue on with their invaluable activities and build on their success throughout the Cattai Catchment.
