The New Rouse Hill

Background

In the early 1980s, the NSW State Government purchased 122 hectares at Rouse Hill for the purpose of developing a regional centre in the north west area of Sydney. Bounded by Commercial and Windsor Roads and incorporating Caddies Creek the centre is located on the former Mungerie Park Golf Course.

Since then, the The Hills Shire Council has collaborated with the State Government in formulating regional and local environmental plans to ensure services are delivered to the growing communities of the region.

In February 2003, Planning NSW and Landcom, selected Lend Lease and General Property Trust as the preferred tender for a partnering agreement to create a new state of the art regional centre at Rouse Hill, consisting of community facilities including library and community centre, schools, entertainment, retail and commercial development, residential development, transport interchange, open space and recreation areas.

When completed The New Rouse Hill project will include over 1,500 residential dwellings, up to 180,000 square metres of retail/commercial floor space, more than 20 hectares of open space, and is anticipated to be finished by 2015.

2010 Update

GPT's Rouse Hill Town Centre in 2010: from planned vision to reality

Since its official opening in March 2008, the GPT Group’s Rouse Hill Town Centre (located within The New Rouse Hill) has achieved many accolades for its design excellence the most recent being a global award in October 2010. Being one of five recipients recognised worldwide as Winners in the 2010 Urban Land Institute Global Awards for Excellence recognises Rouse Hill Town Centre’s unique combination of architecture, retail choices, active public spaces and sustainable design. The Vinegar Hill Memorial Library and Community Centre is located within Rouse Hill Town Centre and has played an important role in enabling the community to participate and enjoy The New Rouse Hill as reflected in the winning entries for its youth storytelling competition Here Now Today conducted in August 2010.

In response to receiving the global award, GPT CEO and Managing Director Michael Cameron said “Rouse Hill Town Centre was designed to respond to the aspirations and culture of the Sydney community in which it is located. Our team is incredibly proud of this project, not least for the new benchmark it has set in sustainable design, but for the way in which the community has taken ownership of it and made it their own.”
